Child Safe Standards

The Victorian Government has announced that a set of new Child Safe Standards (The Standards) will commence on 1 July 2022. The eleven new standards will replace Victoria’s current seven standards and principles. These changes are being made to support greater national consistency, reflecting the National Principles for a Child Safe Organisation. This is to ensure that the Standards within Victoria are even stronger and enable greater protection for children and young people.

What’s changing?

Although similar to Victoria’s current Child Safe Standards, key changes include new requirements:

  • to involve families and communities in organisations’ efforts to keep children and young people safe
  • for a greater focus on safety for Aboriginal children and young people
  • to manage the risk of child abuse in online environments
  • in relation to governance, systems and processes to keep children and young people safe.

The new set of Standards encompass the current seven Standards, however they have been re-written and an additional four Standards have been included.
