Celebrating International Day of People with Disabilities

IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated internationally. The day aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

Sports Focus celebrates IDPwD due to our strong focus on and commitment to increasing the participation of people with a disability in sport and active recreation in the Loddon Campaspe region. We work with sporting clubs to develop inclusive sport and recreation opportunities and environments for people of all abilities.

Many community sporting clubs are already doing great things to welcome and include people with a disability into their club environment. Sometimes however, clubs may need a little bit of advice and support to actively encourage people with a disability to participate fully in the life of their club.

There are lots of simple things that your club can do to become the most welcoming and inclusive environment that it can, and create a place where everyone wants to be. Being known as having a welcoming and inclusive culture can make your club more appealing to new participants, members, volunteers, sponsors and/or supporters.

Hey sport, don’t forget about people with a disability…

As sporting clubs start to make a return, Sports Focus would like your club to think about people with a disability in your local community. Let’s make sure that people with a disability are not the last ones to return to the field, court etc. It is important that everyone has the opportunity to take part in the sport they enjoy as we move closer to a ‘COVID Normal’ world.

Whether your club already has people with a disability participating or not, it is important for your club to consider each of the below.
Reaching Out

Have we reached out to our players and/or members with a disability? Have we communicated what is happening at our club and the changes we have made as a result of COVID-19? Have we asked how people are feeling about returning to our club? Are people comfortable returning now, and if not what would make them feel more comfortable? Remember that some people may not be feeling ready to return to sport at this stage.
Restarting Opportunities

If your club provided opportunities for people with a disability pre COVID-19 what are your plans for the future? When will these opportunities start again? What changes will you make to provide a ‘COVIDSafe’ environment for the participants?
Planning for the Future

What can our club do to be more inclusive of people with a disability in the future? Think about both playing and volunteering opportunities. Remember some people may only want to volunteer and can bring amazing skills to your club.
