Is your club insured?

Public Liability

Public Liability is designed to protect you and your club from costs that arise from an incident connected to your activities. It protects you against the financial risk of being found liable to a third party for accidental injury or death, or loss or damage to property resulting from you or your club’s negligence.

Scenario – A sporting participant sustains a knee injury after tripping in a pothole on a sports field whilst participating in a game. They sue the club for failing to provide a duty of care to the participants and their playing conditions.

Professional Indemnity

Professional Indemnity insurance is designed to protect the club against claims for loss or damage resulting from a breach of professional duty which may occur when coaches, training staff, referees, or medical staff offer instruction or advice and there is an error or omission which results in injury, financial loss, or other damage.

Scenario – Legal action is taken against the club coach who instructed inexperienced players to undertake some tackling practice without any instruction on proper technique. The coach matches up a 100kg “bruiser” with the 70kg “speedster”. The speedster suffers spinal injuries.

Directors and Officers Insurance

Directors and Officers Insurance protects members of the Board or Committee of a club against legal liability if they are sued for wrongful or unlawful acts which can include: negligently giving wrong advice, requesting someone to perform a dangerous task, dismissing staff without proper authority, misleading or deceiving the public, or discriminatory conduct.

Scenario – A senior coach is unfairly dismissed and legal action is taken against the club.

Scenario – Legal action is taken against the club for defamation of a club member. This came about as a result of information printed in the monthly club newsletter.

Personal Accident Insurance

Personal Accident Insurance provides coverage for individuals for injuries sustained whilst participating in an activity including an official match or training session; travelling to and from an official club activity; participation in an official club function; tours or representative matches. Any injury which is covered by Medicare, cannot be covered with Personal Accident Insurance.

Scenario – A builder is unable to work due to breaking their leg whilst playing. The builder can claim for loss of earnings.

Scenario – A participant requires a knee reconstruction resulting from a sporting injury. A claim can be made for some medical expenses.
