Meet the ‘Administrator of the Year’ 2018 Finalists

Representing Central Goldfields Shire – Heather Carr – For her contributions to the Maryborough Lawn Tennis Club

Heather Carr’s contributions, together with the committee she leads, have definitely contributed to the growth of the Maryborough Lawn Tennis Club. Taking on the President’s role at a challenging time, both the financial and governance rebuild of the club have been achieved under Heather’s leadership.  Heather has secured numerous funding grants and built and maintained partnerships with local Council, funding bodies and Tennis Victoria to ensure the future success of her club.

By leading the club down a very clear strategic planning path, Heather facilitated the completion of the club’s Facility Condition and Compliance Audit Report, which has enabled the Maryborough Lawn Tennis Club to secure funding to extensively upgrade facilities and provide ongoing participation opportunities at the club.

Heather assists with the delivery of the Hot Shots program for Junior players, has co-ordinated several Junior Masters Tournaments, participates in the Central Goldfields Shire ‘Physical Activity Expo’ days to promote the club, is the club’s Member Protection Information Officer and has recently worked with Tennis Victoria to develop the club’s first website.

Heather’s lifelong passion for Tennis has also seen her awarded a Life Membership of the Victorian Country Tennis Association, and she was also invited to speak at the Tennis Victoria forum in July this year to provide an overview of the Maryborough Lawn Tennis Club’s achievement in engaging with local government.

In addition, Heather has been a volunteer at the RACV Energy Breakthrough event in Maryborough for more than 20 years and also has a long list of achievements and service to the sport of Taekwondo.

Representing Macedon Ranges Shire – Simon Meadows – For his contributions to the Kyneton & District Tennis Club

For over a decade, Simon Meadows has been a key contributor to the current success of the Kyneton & District Tennis Club.   He has been instrumental in shaping the growth in many aspects of the club.

After assembling a strong committee, Simon set about strengthening the governance and strategic direction of the club.  Under Simon’s outstanding leadership, the club has been able to secure funding that has resulted in major facility development and upgrades over recent years.

A range of tennis specific participation initiatives, such as Fast 4 Events, Cardio Tennis, School Sports events, as well diverse opportunities for both social and competition tennis has seen the club grow from 80 to over 200 members.  Simon has also fostered the development of strong relationships with Council, Tennis Victoria, Government and other local sporting groups to further reinforce the standing that the Kyneton & District Tennis Club holds in its community.  The club marketing plan and volunteer recognition program were also initiated and led by Simon.

These achievements combined resulted in the club being recognised as the Victorian Club of the Year at the Annual Tennis Victoria Awards Dinner in 2014.

Simon is also a volunteer with the Kyneton Football Netball Club, Kyneton Bowling Club, Kyneton Ambulance Auxiliary, and through his role as Chair of the Tennis Victoria Country Advisory Group he has been a Board Member with Tennis Victoria since 2014.

In recognition of all of his efforts, Simon was awarded life membership of the Kyneton & District Tennis Club in 2017.

Representing Shire of Campaspe – Naomi Cartwright– For her contributions to the Kyabram Parkland Golf Club

After being involved with the Kyabram Parkland Golf Club for over 30 years, Naomi Cartwright receives so much satisfaction from providing her community with various sporting opportunities.  Beginning her golf playing career at a very young age, Naomi has been club champion an astounding 7 times, in addition to winning a number of district and state titles.

She has been the Club Handicapper for many years, runs the Social Committee and is part of both the Strategic Planning Committee and Match Committee.  Naomi is the current Chairperson of the Victorian Par 3 Committee, Chairperson of the Kyabram Parkland Junior Committee and Coordinator for both the Goulburn Valley Ladies Juniors and the Junior Development Squad.

A particular passion of Naomi’s has been her instrumental role in running numerous school based and Junior programs, culminating with the Kyabram MyGOLF program being recognised in the top 5 MyGOLF programs in Australia.

Naomi coaches and mentors players of all ages, from junior golfers to the more senior aged participants of the club.  With her additional volunteer involvement in the sports of Lawn Bowls, Tennis, Netball and Cricket in Kyabram, Naomi was recognised in 2016 with the honour of being awarded the Australia Day Sports Person of the Year for both Kyabram and the Shire of Campaspe.  This then led to the awarding of the Kyabram & District Sports Star Award for Best Contribution to local sport.

 Representing the City of Greater Bendigo – James O’Bryen – For his contributions to the Axe Creek Cricket Club

James O’Bryen’s long involvement with the Axe Creek Cricket Club has had a profound influence on the current culture, community-mindedness, and overall success of the club.  Over the years, James has served on every position of the committee.  He has been described as the ‘heart and soul’ of the club and has provided the means to achieve some great things.

James has secured funding grants to improve the facilities and provide opportunities for a multitude of inclusive initiatives.  The club has seen the expansion of their pavilion to provide wheel chair access, a disabled toilet and disability parking bay. They have also been able to purchase a Defibrillator, provide for the installation of new Sight Screens and Scoreboard, along with the re-connection of the sprinkler system and the water supply.  Further capital works projects involving new training nets and the resurfacing of the centre wicket pitch has resulted in Axe Creek Cricket Club hosting their Melbourne All Abilities Cricket opponents for the first time last season.

Along with these infrastructure projects, James has also been in the development of the following initiatives; All Abilities Cricket, Afghan Refugee Come & Try Day, Multicultural Cricket Tournament, Blue Ball Match, 12 years of Pink Stumps Day matches, and the introduction of the club’s Code of Conduct and Member Protection Policy.  The Axe Creek Cricket Club have also maintained their Good Sports Club level 3 status for several years now, participated in the Healthy Sporting Environments Program and were a Finalist for the Best Community Club of the Year at the Victorian Government’s Community Sport and Recreation Awards. In 2014, James was awarded the Cricket Victoria Volunteer Recognition award at the Boxing Day Test Breakfast at the MCG.

Representing Mount Alexander Shire – Ken Maddern – For his contributions to the Castlemaine District Netball Association

 In his own words, Ken Maddern ‘likes to see things grow and show off what Castlemaine sports can do.’

Ken has shown enormous commitment to sports administration across the Mount Alexander Shire for over 20 years and is the current President of the Castlemaine District Netball Association (CDNA).  Ken is also the current President of the Wesley Hill Outdoor Facilities Committee of Management, was President of the Castlemaine Cycling Club for 15 years and served on the committee of the Castlemaine War Memorial Stadium Committee of Management.  It is during his time as the CDNA President that hundreds of hours of consultation meetings and years of lobbying to various levels of government has come to fruition.  Ken and the Recreation Reserve Committee of Management have been instrumental in securing a funding grant of $1.9million to upgrade the netball court facilities. With six new netball courts already opened and the commencement of construction of a new pavilion also underway, the upgrade of facilities at the reserve will not only benefit netball, but also support the football, cycling, cricket, basketball and badminton clubs that utilise the facility.

Ken has always shown enormous commitment, determination and passion over many years to keep projects progressing, despite the invariable challenges associated with each project. Ken attends the netball every Saturday morning to setup and then pack up at the end of the day.  He coaches, steps in to umpire if needed and has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to develop regional tournaments in Castlemaine.

Community members that have been assisted by Ken over the years admire the humility which he displays when undertaking his service to the local sporting community and for that reason alone they are extremely excited to recognise his outstanding commitment and his long list of achievements.

 

 Representing Loddon Shire – Sharyn Lockhart – For her contributions to the Wedderburn Redbacks Inc.

 The amalgamation of the Wedderburn Football, Netball and Hockey Clubs to form the Wedderburn Redbacks may never have been realised for the 2018 season if it were not for the tireless work undertaken by Sharyn Lockhart.  Having already served for more than a decade on the committee of the Wedderburn Netball Club, Sharyn took on the daunting task of liaising with each club involved in the amalgamation to ensure a fair and even representation for each in the newly amalgamated Wedderburn Redbacks.  Elected the inaugural President of the club, Sharyn is the first female President of a merged club in the North Central League.

Sharyn’s list of achievements and positions held in netball is extensive.  She has played as a member of 13 premiership teams, coached for fifteen seasons, held the position of umpires convenor at both club and district level (North Central Netball Association), is an accomplished umpire and plays a vital part in training new umpires, and has also coached both the district Under 13’s team and the Regional State League under 17’s team.

The new netball court and adjoining shed constructed in 2016 were also overseen by Sharyn. In addition to being awarded the Best Club Person for the netball club on a number of occasions, Sharyn was also rightly awarded Life Membership of the Wedderburn Netball Club in 2016, an honour that will now transfer into the new entity.

Sharyn also contributes as a coach of Hockey, as Secretary and Treasurer of the Wedderburn Tennis Club, Secretary of the Inglewood and District Tennis Association, Committee member of the Wedderburn Football Ladies, Coordinates Junior Basketball at Wedderburn College and was the 2014 team manager of the Northern Zone Netball Academy.
